Francisca Tolete-Velcek ’66: Lifetime Achievement Award 2017

Dr. Francisca Tolete-Velcek, UPCM 1966, has distinguished herself in the three pillars of medicine- service, training, and research, as evidenced by her life’s work. She is a Filipina pioneer in the field of Surgery, charting the course for those following her footsteps as a pediatric surgeon. She has literally conquered the world, from her humble roots in Ilocos to an illustrious surgical practice in New York City. She is both loved and revered in pediatric and surgical departments across the city. At 74, she continues her journey of providing the best possible care to patients and has embarked on a new endeavor – mentoring young pediatric surgeons in her husband’s native land, Croatia. Dr. Tolete-Velcek has served as UPMASA Board governor and has generously given back to the UPCM in terms of resources, training and mentoring.
